FACE EXAMINATION OF
INFANT OR CHILD
It should be examined for expression, asymmetry, paralysis,
bridge of nose, hypertelorism / pseudohypertelorism, distribution of hair, size
of the maxilla and mandible and tenderness over sinuses. Dull and expressionless
facies are commonly seen in mental retardation. So characteristic are the
facies in such disorders as Down syndrome, cretinism (congenital
hypothyroidism), adenoids and gargoylism (Hurler/ Hunter syndrome) that a well
conversant observer is often in a position to make the diagnosis from a
distance.
