EAR EXAMINATION OF INFANT OR CHILD

EAR EXAMINATION OF INFANT OR CHILD

You must note the shape, size, and position of the ears. Deformities may well be a pointer that kidney anomalies are also present. Low set years may be associates of other congenital anomalies seen in certain syndromes such as Treacher-Collins syndrome, Apert syndrome, carpenter syndrome, or Noonan syndrome. Such an ear lies below an imaginary line joining the lateral angle of the eye to the external occipital protuberance.

It is useful to examine the ear drum. Mastoid bone should be percussed for tenderness. Hearing should also be tested. A valuable bedside test consists in observing an infant’s response to sound. In normal hearing, he will turn his head to the direction of the sound.
